Interest in WINE: Became a waiter at Jake’s Famous Crawfish Restaurant in 1982. They had a separate Oregon Wine List that promoted Oregon wines. Visits to these list wineries in both Oregon and California provoked an educational process that endures to this day. I took several formal classes which resulted in graduating with a K.W.T. (Knight of the Wine Table) from Harris Wine Cellars. After visiting over 300 wineries in the Northwest and California in seven years, I was asked to oversee and buy wines for Jake’s. (1989-1990)

In 1989, I bought stock in the first offering for a public owned wineri, Willamette Valley Vineyards. This was followed in 1991 by becoming a limited partner in Ridgecrest Vineyard, which is one of three vineyards owned by Chehalem Winery.

Founded my own Wine Consulting Company (Wild, Wild, West, Wine Consulting) in 1998, specializing in wine lists for start-up restaurants and helped wineries without distribution in Oregon to find a wholesaler.

Travel: International Wine Tours include France ’95 and 2008, Germany ’99 and Italy 2003 and 2005. British Columbia on numerous visits and domestically have been to the Finger Lakes in New York, as well as wineries in Georgia, Missouri and Nevada.

Professional: From 2001-2003 wrote a monthly wine column for Le Bouquet, the official magazine for the Chefs de Cuisine Society of Oregon. Received Honorary Sommelier Pin Cordilian Bage in Pauillac, France in 1995. Have judged wine at the Oregon State Fair and the Tri-Cities Wine Festival. Have poured wine at the International Pinot Noir Festival, the Classic Wine Auction as well at Chehalem and Stolier wineries.

Today: Still working my Consulting business. A member of two wine groups the Taster’s Guild and the Confrerie des Vignerons de Saint Vincent Maco (Oregon Chapter). Still working also at Jake’s Famous Crawfish Restaurant.

Alias’s: Besides Doc, am also known as “The Wine Wizard” at local wine shops, Chehalem Winery and the International Pinot Noir Festival. Also known as a hopeless Oeniphile, and for my favorite quote about wine: “I’ve spent most of my money on wine and women the rest I just wasted!”
